IN SEARCH OF SURREY’S YOUNG SUPERSTARS!

SYS2014_Logo

This year we have joined together with top Surrey venue, the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre to organise the second Surrey Young Superstars Awards, which will include a new Courageous Superstar category, to spotlight the many achievements of young people in the county.

The ground-breaking awards, supported by Surrey Life and A+ magazine, as well as SATRO, also seek to raise awareness of Haslemere Travel’s chosen charity, Guildford-based Challengers, which provides inclusive play and leisure for disabled children and young people in Surrey.

Launched last year, the 2013 Surrey Young Superstars awards rewarded and showcased young people’s efforts and honoured them for their hard work and achievements in Surrey. The awards culminated in a glittering awards ceremony hosted by top comedian Rob Brydon.

In July 2012, 16 year old Chelsea Cooper joined the team at Haslemere Travel as the company’s first Apprentice.  An Apprenticeship is a form of vocational training enabling young people to earn while they learn, the skills necessary to succeed in their chosen career.

Apprentices gain key transferable skills such as working in teams, problem-solving, communication and using new technology as well as studying for a qualification, which provides further knowledge and understanding of the relevant job.

Chelsea has completed the first year of her two year apprenticeship and has been working both with a mentor in the business (Susie Atkinson, Manager at Haslemere Travel) and also with an assessor from Training for Travel who administer the learning element of the apprenticeship.  Chelsea is working towards her Level 3 NVQ.

Chelsea has made exceptional progress in just one year and has become an integral part of the team at Haslemere Travel, so it was extremely exciting to learn that she had won the prestigious Institute of Travel and Tourism (ITT)’s Apprenticeship of the Year Award 2013. This award rewards an apprentice for their hard work and dedication to their job role as well as their NVQ qualification over the past 12 months, giving special recognition to those apprentices whom are believed to have excelled during this time.

Accompanied by managing director Gemma Antrobus, and retail manager Susie Atkinson, Chelsea was presented with a trophy by Dame Tessa Jowell MP at the ITT Cocktails event at the Houses of Commons, London on 18th July.

“I am thrilled with this award, as it’s my first ever,” says Chelsea. “I love working in travel and with the great team at the agency and it is my ambition to work full-time in the profession and also travel the world.” Her first aim is to travel to Dubai and the USA, “having heard so much about it from the team when they travel there, both destinations sound wonderful.”

Chelsea will use her £300 cash award towards a holiday in Tunisia in August this year.

“We are so very proud of Chelsea’s achievements!  She is a vital part of the team at Haslemere Travel and we all know how hard she has worked, so to be recognised for her efforts is just amazing.  She has a very bright career ahead of her” said Gemma Antrobus, managing director, Haslemere Travel.

Surrey-based, independent travel agent Haslemere Travel scooped a top industry prize at a glittering ceremony attended by more than 1,000 guests from the UK’s travel industry at London’s Battersea Evolution venue on November 2nd 2011.

Amid tough nationwide competition from high street names such as Virgin, Kuoni and Thomas Cook, Haslemere Travel won the SMALL TRAVEL RETAILER OF THE YEAR 2011 prize in the annual British Travel Awards. The BTA’s are the largest awards programme in the UK created to reward the best companies in travel, as voted for by the British public, with 700,000 votes cast – three times more than last year.

There to receive the award in person from the evening’s guest host, writer, broadcaster and actor, Gyles Brandreth, was Haslemere Travel’s founder and chairman Andrew Brownrigg.

Andrew and his wife Di moved to Haslemere, Surrey in 1988 and founded Haslemere Travel to concentrate on the leisure holiday market and, in particular, to specialise in creating personal and tailor-made itineraries.

“This award means so much more to us all at Haslemere Travel, since the votes are from the public and also from an expert panel of judges, and therefore form a seal of approval not only from our colleagues in the Industry, but also from our clients,” said Andrew.

According to Gemma Antrobus, managing director of Haslemere Travel since 2008: “Since the agency started in 1988, the skills and attributes required to be successful in the travel industry have changed dramatically, with a greater emphasis on customer service, communication, psychology and lifestyle. These are now developed within the company’s strategic programme of networking, skills development and overseas research.

“Our recent staff appointments have been chosen more for their ability to communicate well with customers, and in many cases their knowledge of living and working overseas. Their ability to understand the needs of well-travelled, experienced and demanding customers is of paramount importance and rests at the core of the company’s current success,” said Gemma.

With plans to also expand its Elite Consultants freelance consultancy network, Haslemere Travel has set its sights on even greater success in the future with full awareness and understanding of the increasingly competitive and demanding nature of the overseas travel market.

“In our case, small is definitely beautiful – getting to know our clients individually is crucial to our business and I am extremely proud of our progressive and forward-thinking team.”

Marari Beach which forms part of the CGH Earth group of hotels is a wonderful place to relax after a week or two of touring around Kerala, Southern India. With a traditional Ayurvedic Spa and organic home grown vegetables and fresh fish bought from the village fishermen you will soon feel restored in both body and mind.

Marari Beach in the small fishing village of Mararikulam is an hour’s drive south of Cochin near the port of Alleppy, the gateway to the famous backwaters. The beaches here stretch endlessly for miles and miles along the Indian Ocean a far cry from those further south in Kovalam. The 65 rooms are spread over the hotel’s 55 acres of garden, pools and grove. The rooms or villas are built in the style of the local fishing villages with large terraces complimenting the main room: all have outside bathrooms/showers, fridge and tea making facilities – some rooms even have their own pool.

The large swimming pool is surrounded by lawns and not far from the main restaurant serving traditional Keralan food. If this fails to whet your appetite the beach restaurant surely will with a fine selection of the day’s catch washed down with a choice of Indian wines.

The on site shop has a wonderful collection of local artefacts and in-house clothing – perfect for the local temperatures, and if you must keep in contact with the outside world there is a wifi area.
