Cruise

See some of the most magnificent monuments and treasures of the Ancient World when you explor Egypt on this exclusive tour.

You’ll see the awesome Great Pyramids and Sphinx before setting sail down the Nile on the Sanctuary Sun Boat IV . As you cruise the Nile more highlights of Egypt will drift into view and your boat will pull in so you can explore them fully. Let us take you to the Valley of the Kings, Tutankhamun’s final resting place, and many other imposing temples and necropolises that still have the power to amaze and inspire after more than 4,500 years.

Holiday Length: 6 Days

Day 1: UK – Cairo

You will be met as you land in Cairo and transferred to your hotel. You can relax and refresh in your city-centre, riverside hotel, where you’ll be staying for three nights. It’s the perfect spot from which to take in the city and surrounding areas.

Day 2: Cairo

Cairo has so much to offer visitors. Your private Egyptologist will take you on a trip to the Museum of Egyptian Antiquities, which houses macabre mummies and exquisite treasures found in Tutankhamun’s tomb. After, head to the bustling Khan el-Khalili Bazaar and get ready to haggle over rugs, food and spices. After sunset, there’s the option to see the light show at the pyramids.

Day 3: Cairo

Start the day by heading south of Cairo to Memphis and the Step Pyramid of Djoser, thought to be the oldest stone structure in the world. Then it’s off to the Great Pyramids themselves. At Giza Plateau you’ll also see the iconic figure of the Sphinx still standing guard. You could pop into the Solar Boat Museum, which houses

Day 4: Cairo – Aswan

After a flight to Aswan it’s time to climb on board: your Nile cruise on the opulent Sanctuary Sun Boat IV awaits. After lunch you can explore the laid-back city of Aswan, once one of the most strategically important locations in Ancient Egypt. After lunch, you can visit the Unfinished Obelisk – an unfinished project that still lies half hewn from the rock at the nearby granite quarries, before returning to your boat for dinner.

Day 5: Aswan – Kom Ombo – Edfu

Start the day with a boat trip out to Philae Temple, located on Agilkia Island. Later, back on board, you can learn how to knock up some tasty Egyptian treats with the resident chef. While you’re eating, the Sun boat IV will travel to the crocodile god Sobek’s Temple of Kom Ombo in Edfu. You can also visit the Temple of Horus, dedicated to the falcon-headed god

Day 6: Luxor

While you breakfast, Sun Boat IV will sail towards Luxor, where you’ll spend the day exploring the banks of the Nile. Disembark on the East Bank, and an Egyptologist will take you around the Temple of Luxor and Temple of Karnak, which took over 1,000 years to build. On the West Bank, there’s the Valley of the Kings and the Colossi of Memnon to explore.

Day 7: Luxor – UK

After leaving the Sanctuary Sun Boat IV for the last time, you’ll be driven to Luxor International Airport for your flight home. On the other hand, there are many fascinating ways you can extend your stay and we’d be delighted to help you with these.

Best time to go: October to May

Price: From £1,895pp

The price shown is a guide – based on two people sharing and generally includes economy flights. Your holiday will be tailor-made to suit you and there are many factors that can influence the price, such as standard of accommodation, class of flight and time of year. Joanna Lumley

National treasure Joanna Lumley OBE FRGS is the leading Appeal Patron for Grange Park Opera’s ‘Theatre in the Woods’ in Surrey, the first new opera house to be built in the UK for decades.

Happily, it is not far from our shop in Haslemere, so we grabbed the chance to catch up with Joanna to ask about her travels, love of music …and black trousers

As an author, actress, TV presenter and former model, has overseas travel always played an important part in your life?

Yes because I was born in a suitcase leaving India at the age of one and living in Hong Kong and Malaysia until I was eight. Long sea voyages punctuated my childhood and left me with a longing to keep moving.

What do you never forget to pack on your travels?

Black trousers, a torch and books.

Which passport stamp are you most proud of?

Pretty keen on my Mongolian one.

Gate of monastery in Mongolia p11

Do you have a favourite destination you return to as often as possible?

I loved Ethiopia, where I made part of a documentary, with a passion, and plan to return as soon as I can

Where would you like to go next…?

India again: filming but also savouring the fabulous variety of that stupendous country.

Taj Mahal India p11Who is your dream travel companion?

My husband; but I mostly travel now with a tiny film crew. We have become best friends and I love working with them.

Music plays a big part in your life too…why is it so important to you?

I was born listening to the greats… Mozart, Beethoven, Dvorak, Chopin… on a wind-up gramophone in the Far East. I would suffocate with no music in my life.

What persuaded you to take on the role of Patron for Grange Park Opera (GPO)’s appeal for its exciting, new Theatre in the Woods?

It was the easiest decision I have ever made. I love what GPO does, and how it behaves: all are welcome and their standards are sky-high. The Theatre in the Woods is stunningly attractive and will be a new wonder of the glorious Surrey countryside.

Theatre in the Woods - model

What are your ambitions for this extraordinary new opera house, currently being built in 350 acres of Surrey countryside surrounding 15th century mansion West Horsley Place?

It will be utterly magical: the combination of the majesty of that ancient house and its grand spreading gardens, and the music and dance that will take place in the Theatre in the Woods will be unbeatable.

GPO initiatives such as £35 tickets for the under-35s seek to encourage the young to sample opera – do you recall your first performance? Grace Bumbry singing Aida in about 1964… awesome.

When the curtain rises on 8th June 2017, sum up in three words what you will be feeling…?

Thrilled, proud and happy.

If you could cast your perfect opera, who would perform and what would it be?

Maria Callas and Jussi Bjorling in Tosca. Hearing Callas singing Vissi d’arte is a masterclass in both singing and acting; she was truly as good as it gets. She knew exactly how to portray passion, despair, love and hatred, and Puccini’s music is sublime. Jussi Bjorling had a voice I would swim oceans to hear. A giant.

And if you had to describe yourself as a character in an opera, who would it be and why?

I would rather like to be the Countess in The Marriage of Figaro: although she has a rather wretched time with a scoundrel of a husband, she has an aria so lovely that whenever I hear the music beginning I start to sob hopelessly.

The Northern Lights (or Aurora Borealis) is a spectacular natural phenomena which occurs in the northern hemisphere. Caused as a result of solar particles reacting with the upper atmosphere, they are vivid lights aroung the pole and a must-see for those with a spirit of adventure.

Screen Shot 2016-12-28 at 12.20.48Winter in Scandinavia is ideal for seeing the Northern Lights and although it is always a matter of luck whether they appear or not, there is always crisp, fresh air, pine forests and deep powdery snow to enjoy.

The magical Lofoten islands, an archipelago of beautiful islets stretching out from the Norwegian mainland offer guests the enchanting option of staying in a converted fisherman’s cottage overlooking the water, known as “Rorbu”, from where you will depart to seek the Northern Lights. A cruise from Hurtigruten in Norway, deep within the Arctic Circle is an ideal option for those who want to see more of the country’s coastline – as well as the diverse wildlife, such as sea eagles, pilot whales and orca.

Screen Shot 2016-12-28 at 12.22.24

Iceland offers a huge variety of dramatic scenery and is ideal for a short, winter break in pursuit of the Lights. You can also experience the world-famous geysers and spectacular waterfalls on a tour of the so-called “Golden Circle” by a 4×4 “super jeep”, staying at the 4-star Hotel Borg in the capital, Reykjavik. If Jacuzzis are your passion, then do visit Hotel Ranga, which offers guests the chance to view the Lights while immersed in its open-air jacuzzi.

Screen Shot 2016-12-28 at 12.20.59

Sweden also offers unique holidays to see the Lights in the heart of Swedish Lapland, staying at the incredible Ice Hotel (with sleeping bags and warm clothing provided). This is where you can also try snowmobiling, dog-sledding or a more relaxed, leisurely reindeer-sled ride, either during the day or night (for a more romantic option).

Haslemere Travel is a very proud member of AITO Specialist Travel Agents.

AITO Specialist Travel Agents

While the large chains continually claim to be the number one travel agent in the UK they use only the one criteria – volume. When it comes to value for money, quality of product, original thinking, innovative ideas and customer satisfaction, they are well down the list.

Mass market tour operators cannot hope to provide the same expertise and local knowledge as a small specialist, which is why the smaller companies always top the list in the major Travel Awards. The quality of product and unique experience ensure a high level of repeat business for specialist operators.

If you already have a special interest or are keen to learn something new, then a holiday is the ideal time to give it your full attention, from gentle and relaxing to action packed, AITO Specialist Travel Agents members can find just the right holiday for you, at the right price.

AITO Specialist Travel Agents was formed to promote choice and quality and is the preferred retail arm of the Association of Independent Tour Operators. Members are totally independent of all the major UK travel groups and offer a range of specialist products not generally available through the large High Street travel agency chains.

Once again, Haslemere Travel was proud to host this year’s Surrey Young Superstars Awards on May 9th, which rewarded 14 deserving young children, aged from 9 to 19 years-old, from all areas of Surrey.

PST_1198

The special trophies and certificates were presented by national treasure and Surrey resident, actress Dame Penelope Keith at a special awards ceremony at Guildford’s Yvonne Arnaud Theatre, attended by Lesley Myles, Deputy Lord-Lieutenant of Surrey, the mayors of Guildford, Godalming and Haslemere, as well as friends and family of the winners.

PST_1391

Launched in 2012, this year we were delighted to organize these awards in partnership with the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre, as well as raise awareness of a local charity, Challengers.

The 2014 Group Fundraising Superstars were Beatrice St Pier, Sophie Rodriguez, Maddy Nugent, Lottie Wood, Ariane Boulanger and Jenny Glover.

Pupils from Barrow Hills School, Witley, aged between 9 and 13 years of age, they recently raised £4,000 for facilities for St Benedict’s Primary School in Burkhina Faso, West Africa. Entirely initiated by the girls themselves, they held a ‘Just for Girls Day’ at school in support of the girls in Africa and a farmers market, where they sold homemade produce.

PST_1516

Our 2014 Individual Fundraising Superstar (13-19 years)was Lauren Hillman. This 13 year-old winner from Worplesdon, Surrey was galvanized to raise funds after a very close family friend was diagnosed with a rare brain tumour and subsequently suffered life-threatening illnesses.  She launched, promoted and organized a talent competition for children aged 3-18.

The evening raised an impressive £2,000.

PST_1530

The Individual Fundraising Superstar (5-12 years)was Ronan Lenane.

Inspired by the tragic loss of a friend’s father who died in the care of the Princess Alice Hospice, this 10 year-old pupil from Cranmore School, West Horsley raised more than £300 singlehandedly, by combining his love of photography with the aim to sell calendars to raise funds for the hospice.

PST_1526

Joint winners of Caring Superstar 2014 were sisters Jay and Robyn Parsons.  Aged only 13 and 16, the girls currently care for their mother, who is often bed-bound with a debilitating illness. The girls willingly do all the shopping, housework and cooking for their mother, fitting all of this around a busy school and college life respectively.

PST_1561 We introduced a new category, Courageous Superstar this year and the judges chose two joint winners. The first winner, Oli Nuttall was nominated by his schoolteacher at Aldro School, Shackleford, having bravely faced a plane crash, following a catastrophic engine failure. The skills of the pilot saved their lives and Oli was airlifted to Birmingham Children’s Hospital. Unconscious for the first 24 hours, the medical team worked on his many injuries, which included broken bones and serious lacerations to the face. Everyone has been astounded by his amazing response to this horrendous experience. Just a month after the accident, Oli was back at school in a wheelchair for lessons. His courage and determination to “get back to normal” has been an inspiration to all.

PST_1537The second Courageous Superstar winner, Alex Perryer, is a brave young girl from Guildford who sadly woke one morning at the age of 9 and couldn’t move her arm. Overnight she was fighting for her life and facing life-threatening illnesses. She has since endured countless surgery, agonizing tests and procedures, lost the sight in both eyes and learnt to talk and walk again.  She has done all of this without complaint. She is in and out of hospital, but has never accepted her fate and continues her hobbies as much as she can. The family friends who nominated her described her as ‘the bravest girl they know’.

PST_1553

The final category, Volunteering Superstar, was won by Diccon James.

As soon as this 19 year-old winner was old enough to do so, he qualified as a theatre chaperone and has spent much of his time helping out at the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre. Despite studying hard for his A’Levels, he has chaperoned the child performers at many shows and even after his London commute for his foundation course, still gives his free time during the evening to supporting young performers.

PST_1556

The top award of the day, Superstar of the Year (chosen from among the category winners by the judges) was awarded to Lauren Hillman.

PST_1568

Congratulations to all our worthy winners.

Please keep your eyes peeled for details of Surrey Young Superstars 2015 and how to enter or nominate.
