The Property

We are always in search of destinations that offer both authenticity and elegance and Uga Ulagalla in Sri Lanka delivers exactly that. During a recent family trip, we experienced a stay that was not only deeply enriching but also genuinely luxurious in a warm, understated way.

Tucked away in the heart of Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle, Uga Ulagalla is a sanctuary of serenity, blending colonial charm with eco-conscious luxury. The property is built around a beautifully restored 150-year-old mansion, surrounded by lush paddy fields, gardens, and wildlife-rich forest. It’s an ideal base for exploring nearby UNESCO World Heritage Sites like Anuradhapura and Sigiriya, yet feels a world apart from the typical tourist trail.

Our Deluxe Pool Villa was spacious, elegantly furnished, and offered the perfect mix of comfort and seclusion. Waking up to birdsong and watching peacocks wander past our window and local monkeys swing from the trees was a daily delight.

The service was impeccable! Warm, personal, and always attentive without being intrusive. The staff made us all feel special, adding thoughtful touches that made the whole experience feel effortless and relaxing.

One of the standout experiences was horse riding through the surrounding villages, guided by a local who shared stories and insights that brought the region to life.

We also stopped at a local water tank so the horses could cool off. We loved the Nachchaduwa, a sunset 4x4 experience, weaving through the rural countryside along earthen tracks with a local guide and ending with a glorious champagne sunset - moments that felt authentic and unforgettable.

Food was always exceptional but our standout meal was dining in the centre of a rice paddy by candlelight, enjoying the most delicious Sri Lankan dishes, served in hand made clay pots and cooked over open wood fires! What an experience.
