Terry has recently returned from Mauritius, where he was able to catch up with some of our favourite hotels, check out the newly renovated ones and bring back all the latest news from the beautiful Indian Ocean isle.  Please call him on 01428 658777 or email [email protected] to find out more…

Terry flew with Emirates via Dubai with a short lay over.  The route via Dubai does give the perfect opportunity to not only break up the journey, but also to extend you holiday by a few nights and experience this continually growing Emirate.

Terry’s first stop was at HERITAGE LE TELFAIR, located in the south of Island and with a mountain backdrop of the Domaine de Bel Ombre – the Frederica Nature Park is close by.  The accommodations are housed in villas dotted around tropical gardens and the atmosphere and décor is very ‘Colonial’.  Children under 12 can stay free of charge if staying in their parent’s room and at the adjoining Heritage Golf Club, golf is complimentary for guests.

THE ST REGIS RESORT is located close to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Le Morne Mountain and only opened officially in March 2013.  The hotel feels like a residence rather than a ‘hotel’, with many dining options (one of which has a Michelin star chef).  The rooms are spacious and scattered around the grounds as well as having luxury suites in the main house. Fantastic facilities for children and teens.

LUX Le Morne is still on the southwest coast beneath the Morne Mountain. The décor of LUX Le Morne is colourful and bright décor with lots of wood, wrought iron and natural materials.  Lots of activities for adults and children.  It is possible to upgrade to an all-inclusive package here.

SUGAR BEACH is situated on the west coast of the island and was last refurbished in 2008. Vast spacious grounds, with plenty of grass areas leading onto the beach.  Excellent choice for families as it offers ‘Family Units’. The resort has a quieter area – South Village and has great dining options.  Plenty of activities for all including unlimited water-skiing and windsurfing. PADI open-water courses. Horse riding and mountain biking.

The MARTIM is in the northwest on a 25-hectare private estate known as Balaclava.  The capital, Port Louis is approx. a 20-minute drive away. A great location with the Marine Park in front of the hotel and the Nature reserve behind.

PARADISE COVE is a delightful boutique option with 67 rooms. An Indian concept with the styling of rooms using silks and vibrant colours. Small beach, which leads out towards a creek and all rooms’ here face towards the ocean. This is the perfect hotel if you wish to be near Grand Baie.

LUX GRAND GAUBE is currently undergoing a soft refurbishment that will be complete in October 2013.  Well located and with easy access to Grand Baie on the north east coast. Crescent shaped bay and peninsular (windy on one side). Numerous water sports activities including submarine safaris, catamarans. Also there is a small seaplane for hire.

VERANDA PAUL & VIRGINIE is on the north west coast. This is a boutique option with only 81 rooms.  It has a small beach and accommodation blocks offer thatched roofs, stonewalls and natural woods. A good choice for those looking for a more casual property and good value for money.

On the east coast is CONSTANCE BELLE MARE PLAGE, which is very popular with families, couples and golfers, as the 18-hole course is just opposite the hotel.  Whilst the belief that ‘West is best’ when it comes to the location of hotels on the islands (because of high winds and choppy waters), the Belle Mare Plage has a fabulous beach and this did not appear to be an issue.

Family OFFER at Constance Belle Mare Plage

The CONSTANCE LE PRINCE MAURICE was un-questionably Terry’s favourite hotel. Approximately a 10-minute drive from sister property Belle Mare Plage, so easy access for golfers. There is also a complimentary Shuttle bus that runs between the hotels. A discreet oasis offering the very highest impeccable service. A peaceful option offering luxurious rooms and one to be considered and one of only 17 hotels in the world to be awarded the highest honour by Relais & Chateaux.

All 123 Villas are very private with plenty of vegetation in-between properties, so always a sense of privacy. All the usual water sports and an ‘Ernie Els’ golf course – complimentary for guests. PRESKIL BEACH RESORT is only a 15-minute drive from the airport.  Set in 3.5 hectares on a secluded peninsula – one side a lagoon and the other a beach. The I’lle aux Aigrettes, a unique bird sanctuary, is close by. A good 3.5 star option for those on a budget.

The roads in Mauritius are generally of a good standard, but a new motorway is being constructed to by-pass Port Louis – congestion at peak times can currently cause long delays.

Haslemere Travel’s managing director, Gemma, was recently invited with her family to sample the new ‘Premier All-Inclusive’ program at the award-winning InterContinental Aphrodite Hills Resort Hotel, near Paphos in Cyprus.

The hotel prides itself on its family facilities for all ages, so who better to ask about the trip than Gemma’s 5-year-old daughter Aurelia.  Well if anyone is going to be honest, its the kids!

HT:  So Aurelia, how did you get to Cyprus?
AA:  We flew from Gatwick in the afternoon, with Agean Airlines.  It was a small sized plane, not as big as the ones you fly on to Dubai but they did show a movie, but not a Disney one.  I enjoyed the meal they served me – it was chicken and rice.

HT: And what time of year did you go?
AA:  It was April, during my Easter holiday break.

HT: Was it a long way from the airport to the hotel?
AA: We arrived when it was dark (into Larnaca), so I fell asleep on the transfer.  I think it was about an hour, but Mummy says another airport is closer (Paphos – 15 minutes).

HT:  What did you think when you arrived at the hotel?
AA: I loved our room!  It had a bedroom, a living room with a big bed laid up for me and a huge bathroom.  There was a plate of marshmallows and cookies left out for me, with a really yummy fruit cocktail.

HT: So you enjoyed the snacks in your room – was the rest of the food tasty?
AA:  YES! At breakfast there was every type of food you could imagine, from fruit to bacon, eggs, yogurt and my favourite chocolate croissants! All of the restaurants had a children’s menu with chicken pieces, fish, chips, pizza and pasta – if you didn’t want to eat from the grown-up menu.  I also enjoyed the fruit cocktails at the bar and the Slush Puppies!

HT:  I understand the hotel has a kids club, did you get to go?
AA:  The Kids Club is called the ‘Pirates Village’ and it was amazing.  I met lots of friends there and we played outside on the swings and slide, then inside with the dollies.  They had a swimming pool and slides at the kids club and also their own football pitch and really large pirates ship activity centre.  I made some crafts when I was there which I took home and also had a coloured hair wrap put in my hair.  For the older children there was a teen club and in the evening you can put on a show as they have a stage.

HT: Wow, that sounds great! Did you go every day to the club
AA: Not every day, but quite a few days as I really enjoyed it.

HT: Was it the best Kids Club you have been to?
AA: I think it was as good as some of the others I have been to, as it had every type of indoor and outdoor toy you can play with and there were lots of children to make friends with.

HT: I understand you like swimming, was the hotel on the beach or did it have a pool?
AA: The hotel had a huge swimming pool, which I really enjoyed playing in.  There was a beach, but we had to get a little bus to it.  When we got there, it was a mix of sand and pebbles, but I took lots of Moshi Monsters and enjoyed making homes for them in the sand.  There was a beach club at the beach and we had a really delicious lunch there, I even had a Cyprus Calipo lolly and a Slush Puppy!

HT: It sounds like you had a really fantastic holiday?  Out of 10, how many would you give this holiday?
AA:  I would give it an 8!!  The people were very friendly, I liked all the food, the sun was hot and our room was lovely.

HT:  Would you recommend this hotel to your friends?
AA:  YES!  As long as I can go back with them.
