So what is Social Networking? Facebook was launched in 2004 by a sophomore student at Harvard University. It was initially used to communicate within the college campus, but later expanded to other colleges in the Ivy League. Having dominated the market as an invitation only network, it later extended its membership to a few large corporations including Apple Inc and Microsoft, but from September 2006, became open, without invitation to anyone, worldwide over the age of 13, with an email address.
Facebook is the most popular social networking site in the UK.
