The builders of Sweden’s ultra-cool Ice Hotel.

This month’s showing of the Channel 5 TV documentary series ‘Mega Builders’ focussed on the extraordinary, annual building of the celebrated Ice Hotel in the north of Sweden, 200km above the Arctic Circle.

This iconic hotel has reappeared every year since 1990, and has evolved from what started as a simple igloo to a sophisticated, sculpted set of suites, rooms, bars - and even a chapel - taking up over
 6,000 sqm of space.

The programme tracked how this formidable and breathtaking ice structure takes shape. From humble beginnings as blocks of ice, harvested from the neighbouring River Torne, a talented team of snow builders, architects, designers and artists from all over the world take on this mega challenge of towering proportions.

This fascinating episode followed artistic director Ake Larson and architect Arne Bergh, as they turned 30,000 tons of snow and 10,000 tons of ice (despite unseasonal warm weather) into the coolest place to stay on the planet.

If you would like to visit this unique hotel and maybe take a thrilling, 20km snowmobile tour from Kiruna, across the snow-covered landscape, through forests and across frozen lakes and rivers to the village of Jukkasjarvi, home to the Ice Hotel, then why not ring Haslemere Travel now?

We are more than happy to arrange a cool experience, but a warm welcome is always available too at our Petworth Road shop!
