Rafael Nadal on his native island of Majorca.

Tennis ace Rafael Nadal certainly made the Centre Court at Wimbledon seem very much like home last weekend, with his emphatic singles final victory over Tomas Berdych. But he has since packed away his multitude of racquets for a well-earned rest in Majorca, his real beloved home.

Once again ranked number one in the world, Rafael "Rafa" Nadal Parera was born in Manacor on the Mediterranean island, part of the Spanish Balearic Islands, where he still has a home.

One of the biggest municipalities in Majorca, Manacor has important tourist areas such as Porto Cristo, site of the famous Caves of Drach. Manacor also has one of the liveliest street markets on the island, held every Monday morning and is famous for both furniture manufacture and artificial pearls.

Majorca (or Mallorca, whichever way you prefer to spell it, and whatever way you wish to pronounce it), is the largest of the Balearic Islands, and along with its sister islands of Menorca and Ibiza, lies in the Mediterranean Sea off the SE coast of mainland Spain.

Flying time from most UK airports is around 2 - 2.1/2 hours and local time is one hour ahead of GMT.

The Majorcan climate is typically Mediterranean; the average annual temperature is in between 16º - 17°C. Its lively Spring festivals are celebrated from the end of May to the beginning of June when there are many activities and exhibitions.

Mallorca has without doubt, been one of the most popular holiday destinations for all nationalities for several decades, offering a wide range of attractions to suit all tastes. Generally, the resorts on the south coast are the more lively and thus more suited for groups of young singles, or those seeking an active nightlife. But there are also very many quiet locations for that relaxing break away from the city.

Haslemere Travel’s managing director Gemma Antrobus has just returned from Majorca on a fact-finding mission and can find you the perfect location for your weekend break, family holiday or group stay.
