In the second series of ITV programmes on the Greatest Cities of the World, comedian and travel enthusiast Griff Rhys Jones recently explored a typical 24 hours in the life of Rome, Sydney and Hong Kong. He painted a landmark portrait of each metropolis revealing what gives each city its unique identity.
He took viewers off the usual tourist trail and discovered the interesting and often eccentric secrets and traditions that form the heart and soul of each city.
He sold birds in the markets of Hong Kong. Swam with the locals at a pool club in Sydney. And discovered how everyday tasks are exalted beyond the mundane by being performed in a uniquely Roman way; such as drinking coffee, eating a meal, and going for a walk, to learning about directing the most dangerous drivers in Europe, farming Rome’s livestock and taking a late night scooter ride.

Down Under he also went shark spotting by helicopter and tried to avoid being ‘up himself’, in line with Sydney-sider etiquette.
In Hong Kong, he discovered a shop that sold gifts for the deceased, found himself bottom of a children’s maths class and sang a Maoist anthem to a group of bemused tourists.
From the historical grandeur of Rome, to a laid back lifestyle in Sydney and the hustle and bustle of Hong Kong, his relentless curiosity and sense of adventure gave him the opportunity to experience each city in a unique and inimitable style.
